Donegal County CouncilFriday, June 1st 2001 saw the opening of a major new section of national primary roadway in Donegal. The Clar-Barnesmore Gap scheme involved the construction of over 8km of a new single carriageway road at an overall cost of just over €19m. Contractors Wills Brothers from Mayo took on the challenge of this major project, working through difficult terrain.
The road extends from the new Donegal Town bypass, further improving the N15 and connecting northeast Donegal to the west and midlands of the county; the scheme incorporated three river crossings and a massive amount of earthworks.
The project was funded under the National Development Plan 2000-2006 and the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union. The welcome outcome of this project is a significant reduction in journey times between Ballyshannon and Letterkenny.
