In 1950, Dr. Joyce made a religious pilgrimage to Rome. At the time, foreign travel was a rarity. Dr. Joyce wrote about his trip on his return including a detailed explanation of how the pilgrimage made their way to Rome by ferry and over land. As few people made such trips at that time, one can only wonder at the interest his column must have generated.
