Emigration
The poor law also made provision for assisting people to emigrate. The cost of this assisted emigration was paid for out of the poor rates.
In Milford the guardians were requested to sanction the expenditure of £3 from the rates of Termon electoral division in order to pay part of the cost of passage to Philadelphia for a six year old named Catherine Murray. Her parents, who were living in Philadelphia, had paid £2 and 7 shillings towards her passage and on this occasion the board of guardians paid the balance.
