Telescope Makers to the Stars

The most important outcome of all this astronomical activity, however, was that a brilliant engineer, Thomas Grubb, started making telescopes and optical instruments. For a century his company led the world, one of only a handful in this competitive field of precision engineering. Major observatories around the world, from Europe to Australia, India and South Africa bought Grubb telescopes made in Dublin.

His son Sir Howard Grubb invented the submarine periscope and by 1904 had 61 patents for gunsights. The company's military importance meant that after World War I it was moved to England. It continued making telescopes until 1985, notably for the international observatory at La Palma in the Canary Islands.
