Mathematics
Some people say that mathematics is the language of the Universe. It is certainly the universal language of science and scientists
Mathematics has not been Ireland's strongest science - we have produced far more biologists and engineers, for example - yet Irish mathematicians have made major contributions to this world of symbols, logic and equations. Their work today is important in computer graphics, robotics and keeping space craft in position.
An Irish accountant designed an early modern computer, Guinness's brewery contributed to statistics, and great mathematicians from abroad, such as George Boole, have come to be associated with Ireland because they came here to work.
