Lough Ree Sub-Aqua club was founded in 1993 to help people become divers to carry out searches of lakes and rivers in the Longford and Midlands area. At present it is one of the few clubs to have a dedicated rescue centre, consisting of a 600 square foot building in Lanesborough town centre on the banks of the Shannon. It also owns a Tornado 5.5 boat with a 115 H.P. engine with the relevant safety equipment and insurance, as well as two compressors and a 3.5 tonne Transit van. All club divers are members of the Civil Defence and are fully insured for all work undertaken.
Because of the expensive nature of this work, and receiving only 25% of their income from grants, the club is dependent on the support of the local community and various forms of fundraising for its survival. If you would like to get involved in this most worthy of ventures, further details can be obtained from the club's website.
