Vera McCarthy, first County Librarian in Leitrim
Vera McCarthy was the first County Librarian for Leitrim. The library service began in March 1931 and at one time Leitrim boasted 73 branch libraries. Books were distributed to the libraries every three months by railway, a hired car or by ass and cart to some of the more remote areas. Vera McCarthy retired in 1974. St. Jarlath's Tuam is the first of three large Gothic cathedrals designed on the eve of Catholic Emancipation by Dominick and Peter Madden in the west. Designed in 1827 it was followed by those of Ballin and Ennis.
