Boynagh House, Kilmainhamwood
Boynagh House, Kilmainhamwood
Boynagh House is shown with its thatch fully intact and in a good state of repair. It was built on a very elevated site overlooking Whitewater Lake. It is said that it was built as a monastery, by the Knights Templars in the twelfth century. Count Plunkett stayed in this house. Peter Galligan thatched this house on a number of occasions. A purpose made net was fitted over the entire roof and tied to the walls a number of years ago in an ineffectual effort to conserve the thatch.

Oak Park House, Oak Park (Painestown), Carlow
Oak Park House, Oak Park (Painestown), Carlow
The Bruen Family purchased Oak Park, formerly known as Painestown around the year 1775. In 1832, Henry Bruen commissioned William Vitruvius Morrison to redesign the house. It is remodelled in the classical style and retains the existing house as its central component. The front façade features a two-storey Ionic portico set on a pedestal. Today Oak Park House and demesne is the property of Teagasc – the agricultural research body. It has recently become the administrative headquarters for Teagasc.

Market House (1979)
Market House (1979)
Digital reproduction of an original black and white photograph. From Church Square, Market Street climbs up a slight incline and opens into a broad sloping triangular place surrounding the Market house. The latter is splendid, one of the most delicate and elegant 18th century buildings in the North. The area has been described by Brett as a dignified space, which loses its character through too much car parking.
