In order to fund the building of Brittas Castle, it is believed that Colonel Dunne obtained loans from Germany. The castle was destroyed in a fire on Thursday, June 25th 1942.

The present Abbeyleix House was built by architect Sir William Chambers in 1774. There had been a house to the north-east of the present one, in which the family had lived previously, but there are no remains of this house.
