St.Benedicts Chapel, Dalkey Island.
St.Benedicts Chapel, Dalkey Island.
St.Benedict’s Church on Dalkey Island has always maintained something of an air of mystery about it. It dates from the ninth or tenth century and is believed to have been dedicated to St.Begnet, of whom little is known. The church is Early Christian and is in very good condition. It is built on a stone plinth and characteristics include antaes (wall projections) and a lintelled doorway. The postcard has St.Benedict’s Church written on it and many believe this was simply another version of the name Begnet.
