The woolen industry had been established in Mountmellick since the end of the 17th century. Joseph Beale owned a large woolen mill in Irishtown, and there were up to 2,000 people employed in this industry and in spinning and weaving.

The Square, Rathdowney
Rathdowney is mentioned in historical writings as early as 874 A.D. and 909 A.D., but there is no doubt that the area was inhabited as far back as 3,500 B.C. The name Rathdowney appears to have been derived from a Rath that once stood near the site of the present Protestant Church at the top of the Square.
