CASHEL - The Palace
In 1730 Dr. Theophilus Bolton, Archbishop of Cashel, built this fine Georgian mansion to replace the previous 15th Century residence on the Rock. Designed by Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, the Palace’s large two stories, built of red brick and limestone, was strikingly decorated on the interior with red pine panels and carved columns. In its grounds are two mulberry trees, planted in 1702 to commemorate Queen Anne’s coronation. Also to be found in the garden is a hop tree, from which Richard Guinness, an agent for Archbishop Price, obtained the ingredients for the famous black beer that bears his name. His son, Arthur J., went on to establish the James’ Gate Brewery, with the help of a grant given to him by his father’s employer. The Church sold the Palace in 1959, and three years later the mansion opened as a hotel. Source – Sadlier & Dickenson, “Georgian Mansions in Ireland”
