Martello Tower, Dalkey Island
Martello Tower, Dalkey Island
This tower is built in a very good location from a defensive viewpoint. It is located at the south end of the island and entry would have been gained from the top of the tower for added security. The battery is also visible beside the tower. Also on the island is the ruined church of St.Begnet. This tower is in one of the most aesthetically pleasing locations.

Callows
Callows
Callows are the flat fields and marshland in the floodplains of large rivers. They may be flooded one or more times a year. Being fertilized by the silt-carrying floods, the callows are associated with a rich grassland flora. Callows are extensive along the Shannon around Lanesborough north of Lough Ree, and south of Athlone toward Clonmacnoise and Shannonbridge. The Shannon callows are an important habitat for the now-rare corncrake.
