Scree slope in Glendalough
Scree slope in Glendalough
Scree slopes above the ruined miners' village in Glendalough. Scree is a jumble of collapsed boulders and stones which have fallen from the cliffs above. Some rare plants gain a foothold among the boulders and the tiny wren finds enough food and shelter in the crevices to survive the winter here. (Richard Nairn)

J. P. Brunker-photo
J. P. Brunker-picture of; Wrote Flora of the County of Wicklow. This picture is from a book Wild Wicklow whose author, Richard Nairn kindly permitted its use. This book contains a listing of the plants of Wicklow found by J.P. Brunker over a twenty-five year period. It is a scientific source for botanists and fieldworkers alike. It is a valuable resource for a history of the flora of Wicklow.Brunker divided the county into 8 regions to ensure an accurate account of locations and stations for his recording of plants. He uses latin names for the plants as this is more botanically accurate and necessary for identification. There are over 800 species recorded and some listed plants are no longer to be found in Wicklow.
