A portion of the Ceiling at the Western End of the Room, the work of Italian Artists during the last half of the last century. This room is about eighty feet in length. The ceiling of which is unsurpassed in beauty and design. The stucco, gilding and colouring are in a wonderful state of preservation. Oil Painting Representing the Belvue or Lawrencetown Volunteers
This photograph represents the Volunteer Review held at Woodfield near Birr, Kings County on the 20th, September, 1784. General De Burgh brother of Henry 12th Earl of Clanricarde in seen on horseback, near him also in life size is Peter Banon a Halberdier showing the costume of country men of that time. In the distance are three Officers in the Austrian uniform, the tall figure on the left hand side is Col. Walter Lawrence born, 1729, died, 1796, the figure in the centre is Major Peter Lawrence the only son of the former by his first marriage, born, 1762, died, 1790, the third figure on the right hand side is Adjutant Lennon, in the centre is an allegorical group representing the Union England, Ireland and Scotland, to the extreme right of the picture are two female figures and a peasant in his native costume. The right hand figure in the allegorical group, representing Ireland, is draped in green, under her head is a harp suspended from a tree, the lady who sat in the group was Mrs. Lawrence, second wife of Col. Walter Lawrence, by her mother, Margaret D'Arcy, widow of Charles Blake, of Moyne, daughter of Denis Daly, of Raford, and Lady Ann, his wife, eldest daughter of Michael 10th Earl of Clanricarde; the female figure on the left hand side, is, her sister, Mrs. Naughton, of Thomastown, Co. Roscommon. The centre figure representing England, with a crown, and the hand of an Angel lifting the veil from off her head, and a lion recumbent at her fee, with its paw on a cannon ball, was Olivia Emily, sister of Lord Riverston, Great Grant Aunt of the present Earl of Westmeath and great Grandmother of the present Sir Henry Grattan Bellew, Bart., Mountbellew, Co. A Fresco on the left hand panel in the Aurora Hall, at Lawrencetown, County Galway, 1760, after Pictro Da Cortona in the Capitol at Rome, Born, 1596, Died 1669, Right background a Temple; Left background columns of a Temple with statue of Neptune; Centre background on Obelisk, trees, etc., man, in act of lifting a woman; in centre behind an old man clasps a woman in his arms as if to protect her; right corner foreground a man lifting up a woman; next him a man carrying off a woman; left background, near columns a group of soldiers. This Fresco occupies the upper portion of the south wall of the Aurora Hall, 20 feet long by 15 feet high. There are other Fresco's on the lower portion of this wall. The colossal Busts are Casts from the Vatican Original at Rome, brought over by the late Mr Lawrence. Transcribed from the Lawrence Family Album.
