It is believed that the flora and fauna on the banks of the Owenass river in Mountmellick acted as a great source of inspiration for the designs of the creator and developer of the craft - Joanna Carter.

1798 Monument to the United Irishmen on Wolfe Tone Street Mountmellick
This monument was erected in honour of the eleven United Irishmen who were hanged near this spot in Wolfe Tone Street on the 11th and 13th June 1798.

1798 Memorial Stone in the Ivy Chapel Churchyard
This memorial stone commemorates the Eleven United Irishmen hanged in Mountmellick during the 1798 Rebellion. Nine of the men were buried in the Ivy Chapel churchyard.

Former Site of Beale's Woolen Mill
The woolen industry had been established in Mountmellick since the end of the 17th century. Joseph Beale owned a large woolen mill in Irishtown, and there were up to 2,000 people employed in this industry and in spinning and weaving.

Barkmills Site
A large spinning factory owned by Milner's at Barkmills was opened in 1827. It was converted into a flour mill in about 1846.

Pim's had a large industrial site in Mountellick where they had factories that made tobacco, snuff, soap and candles. There was also a bakery situated at this site.

This inscription reads: "Oh happy is their doom the noble dead, the seal is set on their majestic fame, earth drank deep the blood they shed, fate hath no power to dim their stainless name."
