Plan of Carlow Workhouse
Plan of Carlow Union Workhouse from Ordnance Survey Map, sheet 25 surveyed in 1873 and zincographed in 1875, under the direction of Lt. Col. Wilkinson (not listed on sheet 25). The scale of map is 10.56 feet to 1 mile. The detail of this building is enhanced by use of colour. Entrance from the Kilkenny Road shows central path bounded by grass and scattered trees. A lodge is situated to the right of the entrance. The symmetrical plan is clearly identified on the map. Part of the Parliamentary Boundary can be seen passing through gable on left hand side of map, and to the County, Barony and Parish boundary along the centre of the River Barrow.

Sentinel - Admission of the Press to meetings Sentinel 5th Feb 1842
Extract from the "Carlow Sentinel2 of February 5th 1842 regarding the admission of the press to the meetings of the Board of Guardians of Carlow Poor Law Union. The Board of Guardians had been conducting their meetings "behind closed doors". Accordingly, both the "Carlow Sentinel" and the "Leinster Reformer" Newspapers had been campaigning to reverse this situation. They finally succeeded on December 1st 1841 when Joseph Fishbourne proposed that the press be admitted in future and his proposal was seconded by William Richard Stewart.

This parish consisted of the following townlands: - Ballinacarrig, Ballycarney, Bennekerry, Kilmeany, Moancurragh, Park, Quinagh and Staplestown. Unlike the earlier Valuation, also by Richard Griffith, the occupiers and lessors for each property were listed.

Sentinel - Advertisement for Clerk 22nd Nov 1849
An advertisement which was placed in the "Carlow Sentinel" on 22nd November 1849. It sought applications for the Post of Clerk of the Union in consequence of the resignation of the first Clerk, Robert Davies. The offices offered a salary of £100 per annum and would be elected on December 20th 1849. The advertisement was signed by the sitting Clerk Robert Davies who had held office from the beginning of the Carlow Union and who had been appointed on 12 December 1840.

Entry from the Carlow Poor Law Guardian Minute Books, 1849 showing a reference to a letter from the Poor Law Commissioners dated 13th December 1849. It referred to a communication received by the Commissioners from the Immigration Agent at Sydney regarding the female orphans who had arrived there safely on the Lady Peel on July 3rd 1849.

Richard Griffith [1784-1878]
Photograph of Richard Griffith, the Commissioner for Valuation and noteworthy engineer. He was born in Hume Street, Dublin in September, 1784. He is best remembered for his work as the Commissioner of Valuation but earlier in his career he was appointed Mining Engineer at the Royal Dublin Society and during this period he conducted surveys of all the Irish Coalfields. He died in 1878

Extract from the "Carlow Sentinel" of 26th September, 1840 giving details of the election of the first Ex-Officio Guardians for Carlow Poor Law Union. The ten candidates elected were Sir Thomas Butler, Bart (24 votes), Robert Clayton Browne (23 votes), Henry Faulkiner (21 votes), William Fishbourne (21 votes), Pilsworth Whelan (20 votes), James H. Eustace (20 votes), Henry Bruen (19 votes), James Butler (19 votes) and William duckett (19 votes)

Sentinel - Election of Poor Law Guardians
An extract from the "Carlow Sentinel" newspaper dated October 17th 1840. It deals with the Election of Poor Law Guardians - the first election for the Carlow Poor Law Union. There was a large conservative majority following this election. The extract includes a quotation from the Rev. James Maher an outspoken advocate of the poor and of Catholicism. He was of the opinion that only Catholics could hold office under the poor law. He maintained that protestants had no sympathy with the poor. The Unionist and Conservative Sentinel state that the cess payers have proved him wrong. Twenty Conservatives had been returned plus a further ten among the ex-officio Guardians.

Sentinel - Building Carlow Workhouse
Extract from the "Carlow Sentinel" July 1842 regarding a report laid before the Board of Guardians stating the progress of the building of Carlow Union Workhouse. It indicates that rubble was being used by the contractor instead of the agreed cutstone, in order to cut costs. Subsequently a committee was formed to inpect the work on a regular basis. The extract shows a list of the committee members.
