The 2006 Census revealed that Monaghan's population has risen by only 2.8%, the smallest increase of any county.
This brings the county's total population to a modest 52,772, making it one of the least densely populated counties in Ireland.
Monaghan town is the county's principal town. Other major towns include Carrickmacross, Castleblayney and Clones.
