First Trip

The official opening took place on Wednesday the 5th September 1853 when the directors and 200 guests travelled to Tramore and back the single journey taking 25 minutes. They were so pleased that they did the journey again before adjourning for a banquet.

The public service started the following day, at 12:00 p.m. The local paper The Waterford News (on the 9th September 1853) recorded how a first class passenger carriage started from the Waterford Terminus; "it was crowded with passengers many of whom went for the purpose of viewing the line". This first public trip by train to Tramore took just 18 minutes. The locomotive was a Bury 2-2-2, well tank of the 1837-38 vintage.
