The Route

The Waterford, Dungarvan and Lismore Line passed through some of the most beautiful scenery in Ireland. On one side there are the Comeragh Mountains and on the other side breath taking views of the sea.

The route begins in Gracedieu, just outside Waterford City, climbing and then dropping at the River Suir. It follows the Suir on a narrow strait at Mount Congreve to Kilmeaden. There is a nine mile steep ascent at Kilmeaden and this is followed by a 1 ¾ mile drop into Kilmacthomas. The line reaches a summit at Durrow.

The stations were at Kilmeaden, Kilmacthomas, Durrow and Stradbally, Dungarvan, Cappagh, Capoquin and Lismore. On August 1882 Carroll's Cross was added as a halt. At the time it was the most expensive line to operate as it had three level crossings that had to be manned constantly.
