Claremorris

Claremorris or Clar Clainne Mhuiris, meaning 'the plain of the family of Maurice' is situated in the Barony of Clanmorris whose name has the same derivation. This refers to the famous Norman invader, Maurice de Prendergast, who came to Ireland with Strongbow in 1170. The chief landlord family of Claremorris was the Browne family, one of whom, Denis Browne (1763-1828), was M.P. for the area and acquired the rather gruesome nickname of "Donnchadha an Ropa" as a result of his ruthless treatment of 1798 rebels.

By the end of the 18th century, the town of Claremorris, on the Ballyhaunis to Castlebar road, was well established around its market square. Its development as a leading town in Mayo in the latter half of the 19th century was due to its location on the rail network. Claremorris Station opened in 1863 on the Great Northern and Western line, sponsored by Lord Lucan, running from Westport to Athlone.
