Pirates and barnacles

Pirates do not like barnacles as a barnacle sticks to the bottom of the ship. In fact barnacles will stick to anything below the surface of the water. When the barnacle is stuck to the ship it makes the ship heavier.
Barnacles have to be scraped of the ship so it will go faster. Pirates used to sail their ships onto the sand so they could clean the barnacles from the bottom.
