Bones need calcium to keep them strong. When you eat cheese or yoghurt or drink milk your bones get calcium.

Try this experiment to find out what happens when calcium is missing. Instead of bones we will use eggshells.

You could try this experiment at home.

To do the experiment you need to know that:

  • Eggshells have a lot of calcium in them
  • Vinegar can take the calcium out of eggshells

Analyse your results

Now that you've tried the experiment online, see if you can replicate it at home or in the classroom.

Did you get the same results?

If an eggshell goes soft when it loses its calcium, what do you think might happen to bones if they don't get enough?

Discuss your answer with your parents or teacher.
