Summer fruits in Ireland are very popular for making jams, fruit tarts and crumbles, although they are quite full of flavour all on their own as well!

The fresh jams made from the sweet, juicy raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries and blackberries are delicious, and fresh berries with cream is a favourite summer treat across the country.

Rhubarb is another favourite that ripens earlier in the summer, but did you know that it’s really a vegetable and not a fruit?

Berries usually ripen towards the end of the summer, when birds and people all explore the countryside looking for the juiciest ones. It’s great fun scrambling through fields collecting berries, but remember that they are an important source of food for the birds so make sure to leave enough for them too.
