Ports

As Ireland is an island, we have lots of ports along our coastline! Some of our busiest ports are along the east coast. They are Dublin Port, Dun Laoghaire and Waterford Port.

What other ports do you know? Look at the map for help.

Irish Ports

Did you know that almost two-thirds of Ireland ’s port traffic goes through Dublin Port ?

Most of the ships that come into Dublin Port are carrying goods. The largest car ferry in the world also runs from Dublin Port to Holyhead in England. How many passengers do you think it could carry? Up to 2,000!

Waterford Port is another very important port in Ireland. In fact, it is one of the major ports in all of northwest Europe. In 2008, the quay had to be extended by 190metres to cope with all the cargo ships!

One of Ireland’s biggest fishing ports is in Killybegs Harbour, County Donegal. An new pier was built at Killybegs in 2004 and it has some of the biggest fishing boats (trawlers) in Ireland.

Another important port in Ireland is Cork Port. Cork has one of the largest natural harbours in the world.
