Population of County
In 1841, the population of Co. Clare was 286,394. By 1901, this figure had fallen to 112,334. The Famine and emigration had taken its toll on the number of people living in the county.
The population of Clare continued to fall throughout the 20th century. It reached an all time low in the 1960s when the 1966 Census recorded that 73,577 were living there. Since 1966, it has continued to climb. In 2006 there were 110,800 people living in Clare.
Population of Towns
Ennis is the county town and has the biggest population in the county. In 2006, there were 20,142 people living in the town. This was 7% more than four years previously. Shannon is the next biggest town with a population of 8,481 in 2006.
Kilrush, Sixmilebridge, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Kilkee, Ardnadcrusha and Killaloe are other towns in Clare with populations of more than 1,000 people.
