  • Aspects of Cork City

Green Routes

One way of reducing the number of cars coming into the city centre is to encourage people to use other forms of transport. Cork City Council has developed various measures, which include 'park and ride' facilities. These are parking facilities, usually located outside busy city centres. Members of the public can park their car in a carpark and then take public transport into the city. This helps reduce the number of cars and reduce pollution in city centres.

Green Vehicles

The problem of traffic congestion affects the environment. The more vehicles that are on the road, the more pollution there is in the air. Fuels like petrol and diesel are non-renewable. This means that when they run out, we will not be able to produce them any more. These fossil fuels also produce carbon dioxide emissions, which are directly responsible for global warming. This has the potential to do damage to our planet through climate change. It is important for future generations, and for all life on earth, that alternative means of transport are increasingly used.

Cork City Council has taken a green step by introducing vehicles that run on biofuels. Biofuels come from plants and cause less pollution than petrol or diesel. Cork City Council has a fleet of 400 vehicles, a small number of which already run on biofuel. It aims to have the entire fleet running on biofuel by 2011.
