Terence MacSwiney was born on 28 March 1879 at 23 North Main Street, Cork. He was the fifth of nine children born to John and Mary MacSwiney (née Wilkinson).
Mary MacSwiney was English and met John MacSwiney in London in 1870. He was working as a teacher after spending some time in Rome.
