John MacSwiney

Terence MacSwiney was born on 28 March 1879 at 23 North Main Street, Cork. He was the fifth of nine children born to John and Mary MacSwiney (née Wilkinson).

Mary MacSwiney was English and met John MacSwiney in London in 1870. He was working as a teacher after spending some time in Rome.

John MacSwiney had gone to Rome to defend the against the forces of the Italian nationalist . However, on arriving in Rome he found the fighting was already over.

The MacSwineys returned to Cork, where John started a tobacco factory. The factory did not prosper so he emigrated to Australia, where he died in 1895.
