  • Blanchardstown Through Time

This is how Main Street, Blanchardstown Village, looked in 1900.

Unlike today, there are no cars or buses to be seen.

Can you see the pony and trap on the road? This was a common form of transport at the time.

What other forms of transport do you think people used in the early twentieth century?

This is a photograph of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) station on Main Street, Blanchardstown.

The RIC were the Irish police force outside Dublin before Ireland gained independence from England in 1922.

The photograph dates from the 1920s. The building was blown up in 1922.

Later, Connolly Hall was built on the site.

This is a photograph of O'Reilly's Victuallers taken in the 1930's.

'Victuals' is an old word that means foods or provisions.

As you can see from the image, there is a lot of meat hanging up outside the shop.

Can you see any differences between this shop and the shops people use today?

This is a photo of Donnelly's Public House, which was located on the Navan Road near Blanchardstown. It was previously called Railway House.

It became disused as a public house and was demolished to make way for the building of the Talbot Court residential estate.
