  • Beautiful Limerick Buildings

Local Materials and Skills

The advantage of thatch for people in the past was that the material was usually available locally. Using thatch for roofs saved much money that would otherwise have been spent on the transportation and trading of building materials.

Limerick thatched buildings come in many shapes and sizes.

The one here is used as a pub and is called Pa McGrath's. The building is over 100 years old and still in excellent condition.

Skilled thatchers were once in great demand. Thatchers still exist today, but they are fewer in number. In the past, the owner of a thatched building usually provided the materials, while the thatcher priced the job according to his labour.

Morgans South is an area in Askeaton, Co. Limerick. The thatched cottage pictured is situated there.
