The walls are built strong and thick, as they have to support a heavy roof.
Often, the cottages have a half door, originally designed to let in the daylight and protect children. The cottage above is in Lough Gur, Co. Limerick. As you can see, it is much longer than the one in Loughanstown, which is seen in the image below.
