The lifespan of a thatched roof can vary from twenty-five years for straw to seventy-five years for reed. If the thatch is not maintained or repaired regularly, the roof can quickly fall into disrepair. The photo below is an example of this.

Nevertheless, if looked after properly, a thatched building is a natural, cheap and attractive form of dwelling.
