We usually associate postcards with greetings from friends on holiday abroad. However, postcards from the past to the present day can tell us much about our home place.
Adare Cottage Postcard
This postcard shows one of the thatched cottages on the main street in Adare, Co. Limerick. Those living in the cottages were usually labourers on the Dunraven Estate. This building has been preserved in much the same condition to this day.

The first postcard is a view of a cottage in Adare, Co. Limerick, from the 1940s.
Adare Manor
Building on Adare Manor begun in 1832 to replace the old manor house. At the time this Irish Tourist Association photo was taken in the 1940s, Adare Manor was the still the ancestral home of the Earls of Dunraven. It continued as such until it was sold by the Dunraven family in the early 1980s. It is now a luxury hotel resort.

The Castle, Kilmallock
This postcard shows the castle on the main street in Kilmallock, Co. Limerick, in around 1940. This castle dates from the fifteenth century and is also known as King's Castle and John's Castle. Pedestrians can still use the archway but the building is closed to any other traffic.
