Edgeworthstown station has served the town and surrounding areas for many years. The railway network is now mainly used for transporting mail and passengers. It was once used by farmers and businesses transporting cattle, bulk vegetables and other heavy items that are now carried by lorries.
Edgeworthstown station still has some of its original features. The signal cabin was rebuilt in 1924 after it burnt down in 1922.
Edgeworthstown station is an important junction in Ireland's railway system today. Without this junction, Irish Rail would not be able to link the railway line between Mullingar, County Westmeath and Longford Town, County Longford.
