This map highlights in yellow, the position of Longford town in the county of Longford.
Longford town is situated in the heart of Ireland. It is a gateway to the northwest and the northern half of Connaught. The town was originally set up by the Vikings as a 'Long Phort' meaning 'ship-port'. A local clan, the O'Farrell's, took control of the town in 1400.

Longford town is situated on the south bank of the River Camlin. With the arrival of the Royal Canal in 1830 and the railway in 1855, the eastern side of the town became the main centre of commerce and industry.
