In 1841, the population of Mayo was nearly 390,000. Ten years later, after the Famine, it had dropped by about 30%. The decline in Mayo's population continued for many decades afterwards. Like other parts of the West of Ireland, Mayo was badly affected by emigration. By 1971, the number of people living in Mayo was 109,525.
