  • Aspects of Mayo

In 1841, the population of Mayo was nearly 390,000. Ten years later, after the Famine, it had dropped by about 30%. The decline in Mayo's population continued for many decades afterwards. Like other parts of the West of Ireland, Mayo was badly affected by emigration. By 1971, the number of people living in Mayo was 109,525.

Recently the population of the county, like the rest of the country, has grown. In 2006 the population was 123,648.

Mayo is predominately a rural county. The largest towns are Castlebar and Ballina with populations of about 10,000. Click on the image to find out more about the populations of Mayo's towns and Villages.

Language

Mayo has its own Gaeltacht areas where Irish is spoken as a first language.

The Gaeltacht area is found in the west and northwest of the county and on many of its islands.
