In 1861, the Midland and Great Western Railway opened the railway line from Castlerea to Ballyhaunis, the first railway line in Mayo. In May 1862 the line reached Claremorris and in December 1862 it was extended to Castlebar.
Over the following decades, the railway expanded further and by the end of the 1800s, most of the county's major towns were served by a railway line.
