A Tightly Run Ship
The main subjects taught were English, maths, history and geography. However, other practical skills and crafts were also taught. These included singing, needlework, drawing and cooking.
Sixth class pupils had to sit an exam on each of their subjects to ensure that they had reached a satisfactory standard in each subject. Pupils' conduct was also graded every month. Record and roll books were maintained by the principal to keep account of all the children.
Above is a page of the daily report book for September 1908. As you can see, it notes the number of students present in each class on each day of the week. Record keeping was as important in schools 100 years ago as it is today.
