Thousands of people turned out on the streets of Dublin to pay their respects. McCan's coffin, accompanied by family and friends, travelled from Dublin to Thurles by train. At every station along the route, crowds had gathered to pay their respects.
McCan was given a hero's funeral in Thurles, which was attended by 10,000 mourners.
The funeral procession that followed his remains to Dualla was four miles long. It took three hours to make the short journey to his final place of rest.
