The 'Demesne of Discovery' includes Ireland's historic Science Centre contained in the old stable block of Birr Castle. A castle has existed on the site since the 12th century. There are over 50 hectares of parkland, the Formal Gardens and terraces. The main attraction is Birr's world famous 'Great Telescope' or Leviathon built by the 3rd Earl Of Rosse in 1845 and until 1917 was the largest astronomical telescope of its type in the world. It was left derelict for many years but was restored and opened to the public in the 1990s.
