The Quiet Man Cottage Museum
In 1951, Hollywood legends, film director John Ford and the actor John 'The Duke' Wayne, who were both better known at the time for the popular Western-genre, came to Co. Mayo to make the delightful Oscar-winning romantic-comedy, The Quiet Man.
John Wayne stars in the role of Sean Thornton, a traumatised Irish-American boxer who returns to Inishfree where he meets and falls in love with the flame-haired and fiery colleen, Mary Kate Danaher played by Irish actress Maureen O'Hara. However the course of true love does not run smooth!
The movie was a smash hit and remains popular among the Irish Diaspora throughout the world. The Quiet Man Cottage Museum is a meticulous recreation of the Thornton 'White-o-Mornin' cottage featured in the movie.
