Today, the majority of people in Ireland choose conventional medicine, whose scientific record in curing disease and prolonging lives is proven. However, due to a variety of factors – including a distrust of conventional medicine, a personal concern for control of their own health which they feel is taken away by conventional medical methods, as a relaxing alternative or as a complement to a conventional treatment, or when conventional medical approaches have not worked – a significant minority continues to choose non-conventional medicine.
