THE " NEWS " IN THE TRENCHES." STRANGE FIND IN CAPTURED DUG-OUT.
We received the following interesting letter this morning:-
7th June, 1917.
Dear Mr. Downey -During the course of duty a few days ago in the recently evacuated German area, I happened to enter one of the dug-outs, and on looking round I noticed, on the top of an ammunition box, an English newspaper (as I thought) which had evidently been doing duty tor a tablecloth. Curiosity prompted me to further investigate the paper. Need I say that I was mildly surpised to find that it was an old copy of "The Waterford News". The only conclusion which I could come to was that it had been forgotten by some of our boys when they rented this part of the country from Fritz for the summer months. Assuming that it would be a matter of interest to you to know that your widely-read paper even penetrates the German trenche. I take this opportunity of sending this brief account of the incident.-Sincerely yours,
GERALD N. COGHLAN,
1st King Edward’s Horse, K.O.D.R. , B.E.F., France.
