Irish Setter

History

There are two breeds of setter found in Ireland – the Irish setter and the Irish Red and White Setter. They are very similar breeds but can be distinguished by the colour of their coat. The Irish Setter was originally bred from the Irish Red and White Setter and a pure red coloured dog of unknown breed towards the end of the 19th Century.   It was developed as a game hunting dog.

Description & function

The Irish Setter has developed into a tough, energetic breed with an excellent working ability and great endurance as a gundog. It has an athletic build and requires plenty of activity to satisfy its natural instincts as a game hunter. This spirited breed also makes a very loyal companion and is sometimes used as a ‘therapy dog’ under READ Programmes schools and hospitals.

The Irish Setter is a handsome dog with its deep red-chestnut coloured coat. It is sometimes aptly known as the ‘Red Setter’.
