The following represent an overview of the key concepts of this section:

  • Muscles are found all over the body and are attached to the skeleton.
  • Every movement in the body is controlled by muscles.
  • Muscles are joined to bones by tendons.
  • Bones can only move when they are pulled by muscles.
  • Muscles work in pairs e.g. the muscle on the top of your upper arm gets bigger as your elbow bends. This muscle gets flatter as your elbow straightens and the muscle on the lower part of your upper arm gets bigger.
  • You have control over some of your muscles but not all of them e.g. your heart muscle keeps on beating whether you want it to or not.
