School Wear

Up until the 1950s, most children went to school barefoot. Formal school uniforms were restricted to wealthy schools.

Young children were expected to dress as smartly as possible for school. For a boy, this might involve simple shorts and a shirt.

Most boys at state schools wore shorts until the 1970s. It was generally not a school requirement, but was simply the garment of choice for young boys.

Tracksuits and other casual items were not in existence at that time. The 1980s saw the beginning of the use of the tracksuit for casual wear, rather than just for sports.

Dedicated Followers of Fashion

The availability of cheap clothes and mass media advertising has brought fashion to all levels and ages of society. Nowadays, even school-going children are under pressure to wear the right thing.

Some young people also choose fashion over keeping warm. Young women often choose to wear light, fashionable clothes on cold or wet nights.
