Kilkenny County Library Service
Welcome to Kilkenny County Libraries on the AskAboutIreland website. Kilkenny County has a rich collection of unique material on all aspects of the county of Kilkenny. Kilkenny is one of Ireland's most historic counties. Kilkenny formed the core of the ancient Celtic kingdom of Ossory and was later one of Ireland's most important Norman towns. The famous Witchcraft trial of Alice Kytler brought it early fame. For a brief period in the 1640s it was the capital of Confederate Ireland. It was also the principal seat of the Butlers of Ormonde, one of Ireland's most famous and illustrious Anglo-Irish families. It was also the birth place of the important philosopher George Berkeley. In more recent times Kilkenny has become synonymous with excellence in hurling. You are invited to browse a sample of the collection available online here.
