Background

While the origins of 'Carraigfergus' are uncertain, it has been linked to the Irish language song "Do bhí Bean Uasal' ('There was a Noblewoman'). This has been accredited to the poet Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna (c.1690-1756).

The lyrics of 'Carraigfergus' are not entirely consistent and it has been suggested that 'Carraigfergus' evolved from two separate songs. For example, a song entitled 'The Young Lady' that was published in 'The Petrie Collection of the Ancient Music of Ireland' in 1855 includes many but not all of the lyrics of 'Carraigfergus'.

The town of Carraigfergus is located in Co Antrim, north of Belfast Lough.
