My Lagan Love
|
Background
The lyrics to 'My Lagan Love' are generally accredited to Belfast born poet Joseph Campbell (1879-1903), who collected songs in Co Antrim. He also worked with the composer Herbert Hughes who first learned the traditional air to the song while on holiday in Co Donegal in 1903. This is recorded by Hughes in the forward to the 1904 work 'Songs of Uladh', in which 'My Lagan Love' was published for the first time.
While many people agree that the Lagan in the song refers to the Lagan River that runs through Belfast, it is also possible that this song refers to the Lagan stream that flows into Lough Swilly in Co Donegal.
