Brennans of Idough

The family name of Brennan has become synonymous with both Castlecomer and the Idough lands. It was not until the 10th Century that surnames in the modern sense began to appear in Ireland. Prior to this such names changed with each generation. The names origin lies with a 'Braonan' in the ninth century. His death is recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters.

Little is known of him but he was illustrious enough that his descendents adopted a patronymic form of his name 'Ua' later 'O' Braonain. We know that by the time of the Norman invasion, the Brennan name was well established in Idough.

The Brennan name thus became synonymous with Idough although the Brennans were not directly related to the UiBairrche, from whom the name originated. The Brennan name became so numerous in the area that nicknames were adopted to differentiate various individuals. Some of the more colourful include; Ajax, Banse, Denneymen, Drollen, Goon, Jingler, Marteen, Nickler, Paddymikes, Red-Martin, Shameen and Thumper. This practice continues today.
